Whereas, the outreach mission of the university has grown in response to the expanding and changing needs of the Commonwealth,
Whereas, many faculty members are now involved in delivery of educational programming both on-campus and off, for traditional college credit or for professional continuing education,
Whereas, distance learning has introduced new and more complex roles for faculty members in the design and delivery of educational courses and programs, in some cases making time and location irrelevant,
Whereas, economic development activities, continuing education, distance learning, study abroad, and other pedagogical and curriculum innovations result in new and changing roles for faculty members, sometimes requiring extensive travel or preparation,
Whereas, it is in the best interest of all to maintain collegial relations between faculty members and department heads who are ultimately responsible for assignment of faculty duties and the allocation of available resources, both material and human.
Therefore be it resolved that Section 4.1 of the Faculty Handbook be amended as below with new material in CAPS:
Assignment of teaching load and academic advising are the responsibility of the department head or chair and may vary from one term to the next depending on the department requirements. ASSIGNMENTS SHOULD INVOLVE CONSULTATION WITH THE FACULTY MEMBER AND IN CASES INVOLVING NON-ROUTINE ASSIGNMENTS, SUCH AS THOSE REQUIRING EXTENSIVE TRAVEL, CONSULTATION IS REQUIRED. ULTIMATELY THE DEPARTMENT HEAD OR CHAIR HAS THE AUTHORITY TO MAKE THE FINAL ASSIGNMENT.
